I share your concern about freedom, and laud it.
I only think the niqab ban makes sense because of identification issues. There have been instances of jihadis using facial veils to facilitate their attacks, and I think any businessman has every right to expect that his customers shall willingly expose their faces for security purposes.
Thus, I'm against any ban of burkas / chadores, but definitely support a ban on facial veils, no matter the religious justification of lack thereof.

So I take it one must be on or next to a bike, otherwise a motorbike helmet is treated equivalent to a ski mask or niqab?
I don't know. The link doesn't work on my phone and to quote a 'friend' of mine (earmuffs there may be a couple people here who know him) I can't be arsed to look it up.

The French are idiots for doing this, and so is anyone that supports it. Surrendering freedoms in the name of security is unbelievable crass-stupidity. A life lived in fear is a life not worth living, allowing governments to get away with this is the first step down a very bad road.

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

This was not the first step.

Florida hasn't done much right since but they nailed this one.
Oddly, I'd love to see/hear the xtian reaction if some state now allowed this bullshit in the wake of the Hobby Lobby decision. The screeching would be ear-shattering.
