I didn't see it when it happened, but I saw it on youtube shortly afterwards.
I can hardly believe that anyone invited him there, though I was amused at dubeya's responses to his jokes (at least one youtube video recorded specifically his responses to Colbert's presentation there.)
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

I wonder who it was that was responsible for inviting him-- and were they fired afterward?
I remember when I saw it (afterwards, also on YouTube), I was absolutely gobsmacked. Brilliant.

Oh, so that's why he makes republicans look like pieces of shit. I always thought it was because they were indeed pieces of shit, except for the intelligent ones (the minority).

Yeah, he's a parody of crazy, right-wing nutjob Republican conservatives. That's why his show is on Comedy Central...

I've only seen him out of character once. It showed him back stage talking with one of his guests before the interview. He was explaining that it was only a parody and telling his guest not to take any of it personally.

Join The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. on October 30th for the "March to Keep Fear Alive"™ in Washington DC.
Watch Stephen give the marching orders on The Colbert Report.

Oh boy, do I have a fun news article for you all TODAY!
BAM!
The above link is a news article with the title:
Glenn Beck Calls Stewart/Colbert Rally a Progressive Plot
But the article just isn't a tirade about how evil a set of liberals that the two fake news anchors are, but more from the perspective of a third observer. I was particularly impressed by this gem:
Glenn Beck Calls Stewart/Colbert Rally a Progressive Plot: Posted on September 20, 2010 by Jason Easley Wrote:What Glenn Beck is really afraid of is that Stewart and Colbert’s rally will draw more people than he and Sarah Palin’s, (which it will). He, like the rest of Fox News, is terrified of the young viewership of the Comedy Central mock news programs. Fox News pulls an old demographic. The majority of the network’s viewers are over 50 years old.
The comments also, I think are a valuable read. I was particularly impressed by this one:
JamesPMorrison Wrote:Beck and his herd think Reading is Fundamental is a progressive plot.
This is all just fan-tastic.
