Has been since Civ I, where the two victory conditions were either being the first to successfully launch a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri, or to militarily defeat all of the other civs.

They didn't have cultural or diplomatic victories from the start, huh? I may have played Civ 2, but remember Civ 3 more clearly. What's your favorite Civ in 5? I really like Rome, but I also like Shoshone in the BNW DLC.

No, that's a relatively recent addition.

I'll play any of the civs, but the one I keep going back to is the English on island maps.  Ships of the Line for the win.

Yeah, if you're going to play as England, go for the islands. To be fair, I choose rivals that have some bonus or unit that also has to do with the water. Actually I often try to make rivals that have something to do with the faction. Like the kind of civilizations that would realistically be around me.

Whenever I choose Alexander, I always make sure Attila is in the game too. Bitter enemies to the end, I say!

In Civ 3, I think it was China that has military and production, so that was a good warmongering civ. Babylon was the religious and science civ. I kind of liked Shaka's military and expansion layout. Their spear unit could move as much as horsemen, so they were a problem in the ancient age.

I think I played someone else's Civ 2 for a bit, decided to get Civ 3 for myself, moved on to other things when Civ 4 came out, then bought Civ 5 for my Steam library.

Well, "fair" doesn't really enter into the equation - the way I play naval / island maps, the AI doesn't stand a chance.

I like Civ II, especially its map editor.  I like playng the Aztecs, so I made a large-scale map of lake Texcoco and surrounding areas with the islands, which I did also with Civ III.  I also liked the Civ II Fantastic Worlds expansion.  I enjoyed playing the Atlantis scenario and its tech advances.

If my memory serves correctly cultural victory was added in Civ 4.

The cultures I like playing the most are Babylonians, Greeks, Egyptians, and Aztecs.  Playing against the Russians gave me fits sometimes.  One game I got so pissed at the Russians for attacking my civ every time I made a peace treaty with them I went all military and captured/destroyed most of their cities.  Don't mess with me, I will crawl down your throat and carve you out a new asshole.

The AI is funky sometimes. In a recent game I found out one of my neighbors was the Mayans, who are big warmongerers. On the other side was a civ who actually asked me to join a war with them. I thought "Ok, give me some time, and we'll hit them from both sides". For one reason or another, The other civ made peace right as I was getting my army together to ransack a Mayan city.

I figured this might be coercion from the Mayans, so I continued and razed a city. Now the other civ, who asked me to attack, things I'm a warmongerer. Now I have a penalty to diplomacy for attacking the guy he wanted to attack, and also he covets my lands despite not even bordering me.

With the Russians they might just be an untrustworthy faction. Their bonus towards military resources could make them aggressive enough to not get along well with others.
