A better question would be - Why create a son? Why not show up in front of everyone, start a press conference and tell humanity what you want them to do?
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Indeed, the ludicrousness of the story makes it all less likely still. LOTR is way more consistent and believable.

Personally, I find it difficult to squibble over which fictions are "most plausible" by non-fictional standards, though evidence seems to indicate that would have to be "Star Trek," at least from a tech standpoint.
Both Sauron and Jesus have what I would define as "magical powers," which at this time jibes directly with what I know of the natural world; therefore, until further evidence suggests otherwise, both characters have about the same likelihood of historicity (which is to say zero).
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

More likely I am god. Firm evidence for my existence, for one.

Sure, I'll accept that as a very reasonable answer

I'll have to concur. If I were to choose just one fantasy story, it would be Star Trek, no doubt about it.

I'm most often instructed to consult answer D.

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Oh, of course, the argument from dubious literature! How could I have forgotten? Silly me
