On an only -slightly- more serious note - that's a portion of who I am and what I hold to that I never try to justify, don't care to - and it's the closest experience I have to how I view the religious beliefs of others. If somebody finds cause to criticze what I;ve done or what I'm willing to do in service of -that-.....I'm not going to waste my time trying to argue that I'm right for it, I can accept that my motivations in this have nothing to do with right and wrong, and there's just no requirement, in me or for me, to be right in order for that conviction to compel me to action.

Ideas are not sacred, and they don't deserve to be, otherwise we're heading straight towards totalitarianism. Or, you know, religion. If you can't stand having your beliefs scrutinized, keep them to yourself.
If my beliefs hurt your feelings, then I won't talk about them in front of you.
And like I said in another post, if you truly think one of your friend's beliefs is harmful, I would advice you to sit down with them, and in a respectful conversation, tell them your concerns... and do so just one time. Bugging someone about it over and over again is not your place. And making fun of them to your friend's face, is just rude.

It is one thing to do something because you want to hurt someone versus wanting to do a thing and realizing that might happen. In RL I don't make too many sacrifices for other people's feelings. If we disagree or what they want and I want is incompatible, I don't think I owe it to anyone to sacrifice what I want.
I'm not talking about HERE, whateverist. And I'm not even talking about me specifically. I never said anything about people making fun of religion here.
I'm talking about in real life, to the face of a real life friend. And this conversation all started when Rhythm asked me about a religious friend of his.
This is the problem with these online discussions. People don't read the conversations thoroughly and then start assuming I'm saying things I'm not actually saying lol. It's very frustrating.

lol....Cath.....-you're- the religious friend of mine, that I was discussing.....in case it flew over your head entirely, wasn't a particularly covert implication either. Here you are, criticizing others for not reading a discussion thoroughly.......delicious.
The long and short of it, friend, is that you're creating a taboo for beliefs which you're clearly not willing to extend elsewhere -as evidenced in this very thread-. This is, if you've never had the chance to hear it opined upon...one of the things about religious faith and religious people that irks many atheists deeply. You might even call it -offensive-.

This is a good question, and this is what I think a lot of people here don't understand. Yes, a person's religious beliefs, if they are devout, is a HUGE part of who they are.
It's basically like saying, "I'm not making fun of you, just making fun of your most core values and principles, what you stand for, and the things you hold most dear in your heart."
