One Agnostic's View of the New Atheists
|
I'll concede the point that there's some arguments made by New Atheists that are simply dumb and rely on false dichotomies and hasty generalizations, but why does that matter? Not everyone thinks like Richard Dawkins or Harris.
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
What is a New Atheist? I keep seeing this everywhere but no one ever says what it means.

A new atheist is an atheist that hasn't fully taken all the bullshit to be offered?
Am I, an old atheist? RE: One Agnostic's View of the New Atheists

It's a word used to describe atheists who organize themselves around institutions, write books and are passionate about atheism. Check Richard Dawkins and his followers on Twitter, notice how homogeneous opinions are in the comments. I certainly don't keep my mouth shut, that's something only a totalitarian regime would force me to do - But I do like keeping distance from certain labels if it doesn't fit me. I think someone like Alain de Botton is an example of an atheist who doesn't fit the definition of new atheist, or maybe atheists from previous generations (i.e. Freud)

You guys are the only people who even know I'm an atheist so I guess I can't pass for a new atheist either lol.
