I suppose at that intensity it would weaken exceptionally rapidly after passing over the coast, but that coastal area is really going to get clobbered.

The inland terrain is very mountainous, and I would expect it to dissipate pretty quickly. Unfortunately, everyone in the area I am concerned about are within a few city blocks of the coast. I heard they're evacuating Puerto Vallarta, but I don't know where they're going to evacuate *to*.
Hopefully they'll evacuate. With winds like that there will be nothing left of any coastal settlements after.

Local weather touched on the hurricane and noted sustained winds of 200 and gusts to 245.
I can't imagine how you could build things to withstand that and to be large enough to safely house literally entire communities. I'm sure we're going to hear from America's favorite money grubbing religious turd, Pat Robertson, about this. It's already kissing the coast. Wonder if its exceptional strength has to do with warm water in western pacific resulting from the El Niño.

Well, the community that I am most familiar with that is closest to where the brunt of the storm will hit is Melaque / San Patricio / Barra de Navidad. There are a few tens of thousands of people living there, and typical construction standards are... not likely to withstand 200mph winds. There are properties that were partially destroyed in the last big hurricane (1997) that are still unrepaired. There's a lot of poverty. Manzanillo is not far away, that is a sizeable city. Puerto Vallarta will get hammered as well, and we're talking 6 figure population. Hopefully, the storm will just be a storm by the time it reaches Guadalajara - there are millions of people there. |
