I think that Rubio as nominee with Kasich as his running mate might be the GOP's most potent possible ticket among the crop of contenders. Granted, that's not saying much, but the opportunity for the Republicans to have on the ballot a senator from Florida with possible appeal among Hispanics and a governor from Ohio is about as good as it's going to get for them. They can't possibly win without carrying such swing states.
Edited to add: I only put Rubio as the nominee in this scenario based on each man's position in the polls, not necessarily because I consider him a stronger candidate per se. My opinion of Rubio is that he is an empty suit, and I consider Kasich the more substantial of the two. But perception tends to become reality, and Kasich's current poll numbers aren't helping his prospects. He will have to have some fantastic debate performances to significantly improve his chances.

Ah, bipartisan politics- Do you want to be bent over to the right or the left before you get fucked? This is shaping up to be a nasty election and either way it goes, the American public will get fucked over.

I consider it more like a choice between being penetrated in the butt or in the nose. Ok, fine, you're getting screwed either way, but one will be rather more pleasant than the other.

Goldwater may have been truly crazy, but he was true to his crazy principles, so he was a predicable quantity.
Today's "crazy"s are mostly slimy narcissistic opportunists who would gladly let the humanity burn if by so doing they could get the opportunity to admire themselves in reflected light for just a brief moment. They would embrace each and every crazy fart in the wind no matter how mutually contradictory these are. They are the true and natural sons of the Reagan revolution.
Virtually irrelevant. Goldwater would have been thrown out of todays republicunt party.

Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?
And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."

Yeah, I predicted this months ago and for the same reasons as OP: in 2012, there were crazy candidates after crazy candidates that all hit the top of the polls for the Republicans. It wasn't until quite a bit later that they settled on the most reasonable candidate in Mitt Romney (and it might sound strange to call him reasonable, but look at his competition).
And now? Same thing. 4 years ago it was Michelle Bachmann and Herman Cain and Rick Perry. Now we have Trump and Carson and probably another few nuts before they find someone who isn't completely crazy.
I'm surprised and disappointed that Jeb Bush is actually polling fairly well. I mean, he's not top of the heap, but he isn't out of it, either. I remember just 8 years ago, the GOP was doing everything in their power to distance themselves from Dubya, and now they're entertaining the idea of a president who came out of the same uterus? Does the electorate have that short a memory?
Carson is the token black candidate. The GOP is about 20 year behind the Dems in race issues and for about 20 years before Obama became president, they always had a "token" black candidate who never actually got very far. Now the GOP is starting to bring up token back candidates... and in maybe 20 or so years, they'll actually let a black person win the presidency. Truth is, racism has become too acceptable within the GOP for a black person to win their nomination.

I don't know about Trump but tonight on the Rachel Maddow show she interviewed some reporter who made reference to this scene from Holy Grail in relation to Bush's campaign.

The President and Vice President have to be from different States. That's because the electors in the Electoral College can't vote for two people from their home States. In other words, the Florida electors could vote for Bush but if they did then they couldn't vote for Rubio. In a close election if Bush won he could end up with a Democrat as his VP. But if it was a Bush landslide across the country it wouldn't matter. Then Rubio wouldn't need the Florida votes to become VP.

Who was a redneck? Dubya? LOL, no. Born in New Haven, Connecticut...a member of the wealthy elite...who attended both Yale and Harvard. I think that maybe you've fixated on Texas and oil, but perhaps it would be more appropriate to think of him as a member of an invading oligarchy. Rednecks -worked- for him, both in the fields and in the polls. He was never one of them.
