Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion [SPOILERS WITHIN]

I don't remember much of the books...I need to read those things again... [aloud?]

They needed to be different, Mr Martin just loves to start new story threads without tying up others and the number of characters was getting a bit silly. They had to prune for TV or it would be unwatchable.

I won't care, honestly.  I've never been a purist between books and tv or movie adaptations.  I know that different mediums require different kinds of story telling that often require alterations in the story.  I'm a huge reader, and there have only been a handful of times when I've hated a TV or movie adaptation.  Dean Koontz's Watchers was one, because they basically changed the whole point of the story, and the movie just sucked even as a stand alone story.  But mostly, I enjoy movie adaptations, like all the HP films (well, except 3, lol), Coraline, The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings (the Hobbit I'm kind of meh on, mostly because it was toooooo long), Memoires of a Geisha, and a ton of others.

Anyway, my point is, I have not cared about how the TV show has diverged from the existing books, so I doubt I will care when the books finally come out (if they ever do!) and they diverge from the TV show.  I'm just happy to get some of the story, because I very much fear Martin will kick the bucket before he ever finishes the books anyway.

I don't remember but I think the actual joke there was that Firefly was cancelled after one season.

You mean except 3 of them, or except the third?

I thought the third was meh too, until I watched this. Big Grin

I am TOTALLY PSYCHED by the new stills. Unfortunately, I know *exactly* what's happening: they're setting me up to think that all the characters I like are going to be awesome and good and finally get their ultimate rewards (like Sansa running away and Jamie coming back and chokin' a bitch and Tyrion and Varys kicking ass) but I'm going to watch them and by episode 7 or 8 it will have all unraveled and two of them will be dead and the rest of them will be getting flayed or have a disease or something.

I *am* TOTALLY SUPER ULTRA-PUMPED for one of my very favorite actors of all-time, Max von Sydow, to join the show (he's the guy with Bran; you may know him from his famous work in things like The Seventh Seal, or more recently as the guy at the beginning of the new Star Wars movie who gave Poe Dameron the map)

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.

I'm not going to continue to watch the series until the relevant books come out first. I know the creators already know where the story is going so I'm not about to watch 10 hours of spoilers before reading the actual books. The books come first, always.

Hmm; I was guessing a meaning more like "I enjoyed the HP Movies except for three of them - 1, 2 and 4"

Except she said she liked all of them, but for 3. Seems odd to exclude almost half of something before referring to it as almost all of it.

Ha, actually, I meant #3.  I think 1 and 2 have some pretty bad acting by some of the kids, but I just love the simple magic of them, they capture the books perfectly.  #4 has issues, but mostly it is from trying to cram a lot of book into one movie.

#3 is my least fave book as well as movie, but the movie is just....gack.  That director screwed up so much stuff, important stuff. Like Harry steals a lolly from Neville....that's not something Harry would ever do!  Also, effing up Patronis's, (which later movies corrected), and the layout of the entire grounds.  And time travel.  Blech, poor choice by JK, and poor implementation in the movie.

But AAANyway, back to GoT's.   There is no way I'm waiting for Martin to finish the novels, lol.  First off, he's wandering around too much in the last 2 books, not staying focused.  Other series have done that (Wheel of time) and it is the #1 top most annoying thing a series writer can do, IMHO.  When I need to keep notes on who characters are, where they are, and why they are there because there are literally 100's of people I now need to keep track of, the author has gone too far, imo.

For example, I'm reading a great chapter about Cercei and the Sparrows, and then the next chapter starts out talking about what Sir Tytos Blackwood is doing, and I'm like, who the fuck is that again?  And why do I care?  It happens a LOT in books 4 and 5.  Some people may enjoy that, but he's gone off the deep end IMO, and needs to get back on track for the 40+ characters I do know and have managed to care about.

Anyway, the TV show is doing a good job of condensing it down, and actually delivering the story, instead of sitting on it for years and whining about how the fans are impatient.  Just saying...
