Remeber how the Passion of the Christ went down. There were the usual suspects cheering it on and the rest calling it a bigoted splatter movie. Do you think, shit like that is bound to convernt anyone not already being firmly in that camp?

Look, this really isn't any different with real religion than it is with Coke Vs Pepsi or Ford vs Chevy. Most of the time people stay put in their respective camps. So the marketing isn't for them outside maintaining their attention as a reminder, but like any business religion is no different, it wont grow if it doesn't expand it's base.
Even then in religion worldwide there are tons of people who leave one religion for another, or drop it altogether. But yea, I remember the hype of that movie, it was obnoxious.
But see here is the thing, it is worth the long term skepticism, because we know from history that social norms, while they can be slow to change, have changed. If we never questioned social norms our species never would have left the caves.

This one puzzles me, because I'm a huge fan of Anne Rice. She started out VERY Catholic, and then slipped away from the church. She went back for a short while, and wrote this "Christ the Lord" novel. Now she openly states that she wants nothing to do with the Catholic Church, and claims to believe in God, but not much more. Her son Christopher is gay, and she is a champion for gay rights. And yet, she is "very excited" for this film.
Hmm. Well, it's probably going to make her a boatload more money. So she's supporting it. Too bad she can't just come out and say "this is fiction, folks" though.

Have you heard any author or participant of any given film say that it's shit and you shouldn't watch? It's always being excited and stuff, which by the way is PR talk 101. Everytime some public figure says something about being excited over anything, you can bet your ass there's some PR firm standing right behind their mouthpiece.

I just don't think it's possible to make a religious movie without some homoerotic content.
Jonathan and David in King David, 1985 WOOT !!
And this Jesus ?!?!?!?!
REALLY NOW, he's just too too fucking HOT HOT HOT !!!

Schindler's list, 1993.
Apart from that, you must have watched a different Private Ryan, since apart from the first 20 minutes, it's all flag waving heroism. Guy doesn't give a shit about his grieving mother or his dead brothers. His company is his family now and of course he will go on fighting, since he's your usual cardboard hero to present an ulterior motif.
You should watch some war movies from the early 70ies at some time, to really put things into perspective. From back when Reagan was nothing but a bad dream and society was as opposed to war as it gets.
Deer Hunter
First Blood
Platoon (post Reagan, but before all the flag-waving horse-shit which Private Ryan kicked off).

I actually like watching a christer film once in a while; looking for homoerotic imagery, hot hunky bearded mens, and gross heresies.
What was that christer flick with Richard Gere ?? Damn, I beat off to that one, WOOT !!
Before "Left Behind", there was the "A Thief In The Night" series, which included "Image of the Beast". All featured incredibly nubile, and often blonde women in very tight, and very short clothing, and these were the good Christian young ladies. They were all which that series had going for it - the writers and the acting talent made Kirk Cameron look like a genius.
