I used to be a big fan of the Dirty Harry Series, but while it was still a mere movie, I do think it had an impact on society that built our presume guilt Nacy Grace mob rule mentality.
And as much as I love Star Wars, let's face it, even it's overall theme is mixing religion with war.

Totally agree on Saving Private Ryan... maybe as overrated as Lincoln.
On topic, what amuses me is how mainstream Christians canonize these films and books like Left Behind. I remember bible studies where people would start talking about Left Behind like it was all directly from the bible. Same people who got angry over The Da Vinci Code being a "LIE!" and I'm sitting there going "You know it's a fiction book, right?"

Fleecing the christers out of their money with 70mm spectacle and $7 cups of popcorn keeps them from sending more filthy lucre to the likes of Pat Robertson.
I actually like watching a christer film once in a while; looking for homoerotic imagery, hot hunky bearded mens, and gross heresies.
What was that christer flick with Richard Gere ?? Damn, I beat off to that one, WOOT !!

Most of what Hollywood puts out is crap. They know the mentality of their audience.
Add in fucking jesus and the film just has no chance whatever.

They're hoping to target the God's Not Dead, and God's Not Dead 2: Melissa Joan Hart really wasted her career audience.
The concept is kind of silly, and sure to upset Christians and Atheists alike.
Funny enough I looked up the trailer to the movie, but there was an ad before it--which was the trailer for the movie.

But the truth is media marketing DOES WORK otherwise nothing would get sold.
The Dirty Harry, Die Hard , Miami Vice bad cop zeitgeist climate was a reaction to 60s hippy movement and 70s and 80s increasing drug use.
Art in all it's forms, paintings, music, tv, poetry, books, are a reflection of society's mood at the time.
Richard Dawkins proposed "meme theory", now while my take on that is that really he simply made a new term for the word "marketing", there still is truth that it does work. If an idea becomes popular it is far easier to spread and market. And I can tell you back in the 80s "Tough on crime" was a popular meme both in media and law making.
