You've not experienced Tolkien until you have read him in the original Klingon.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
I wouldn't call them among the greatest movies ever, but to me they transport at least some of the epic mood and atmosphere of middle earth, and the innocence of the shire vs. the outside world.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

I guess you have to be a fan to really like the movies. I appreciate what Tolkien did, how much love, detail and effort he put into his novels, but try as I might, I never got drawn in.

Some people have accused Christopher Tolkien of publishing his father's wastepaper basket. Aside from the fact that it's pretty unusual for an author to have a wastepaper basket worth publishing in the first place, I thought 'Unfinished Tales' and all the others were utterly fascinating. I had the book of his letters/correspondence at one time (can't seem to find it now). That was an interesting read.

If it weren't for fucking Tom Bombadil... I fucking loathe Tom fucking Bombadil.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
