Muhammad Ali was no ‘draft dodger’

— but these five famous political figures were

Drumpf, Cheney, Gingrich, Clinton but, best of all:

OK, so this last one might be a little unfair to Rush, but his reason for being disqualified from the draft is too funny to leave out. The infamous talk-radio barker received a student deferment in his first year of college before he decided to drop out. In theory, this should have made him eligible for the draft, but he was soon disqualified except in cases of a national emergency.
Why, you ask? Because he apparently had a problem with anal cysts that prevented him from being an effective soldier. While this may indeed be a legitimate reason for not serving in Vietnam, it’s hard to imagine Rush would grant any Democrat the benefit of the doubt if they claimed they weren’t qualified for the draft because they had defective asses.

Why do all the icons of conservatism have to be so outrageously, ostentatiously pathetic?
I mean, come one. If they aren't being arrested on nine counts of child pornography, they evaded service to their country because their buttocks are fucking worthless. Why! Someone, tell, me, why! Why do people listen to these bastards!

What's the issue over dodging the draft for something as shitty as the Vietnam war anyway? Even if Ali had dodged the draft, more power to him. It's not as if he had been the only one, if he did. Ted Nugent virtually crapped his pants to evade the draft. I don't hold it against him. I only hold the cretin he's become against him. The lowest sort of lowlife. Promoting war, weaponry and violence whilst saving his own ass.

I wouldn't give a shit if Ali did dodge the draft. Fuck the draft.
Although those politicians got out of it and nobody cared because they were rich white boys, let's be real. Money talks and when you're at a certain position in society you can find ways to pay your way out on the hush hush.

"Ironically like the nativist far-Right, which despises multiculturalism, but benefits from its ideas of difference to scapegoat the other and to promote its own white identity politics; these postmodernists, leftists, feminists and liberals also use multiculturalism, to side with the oppressor, by demanding respect and tolerance for oppression characterised as 'difference', no matter how intolerable." - Maryam Namazie

The issue is that the Chickenhawks are perfectly willing to send other people off to die but when they had the chance they would rather have been somewhere else.

Yeah, and what else is new? We had that discussion back in 2003 over at fearbush, when all the draft dodgers sent others to their doom. As Yeauxleaux said. They will always find a way to wiggle out. If I'm not mistaken the system of wiggling out for rich people has even been institutionalised at some point. Hasn't there been a system of paying for another one - a poor one, of course - to take one's place?

During the Civil War.
Now they call it an All-Volunteer Army and recruit people who are desperate for a job while the super rich don't even bother going to the Service Academies anymore.

Muhammad Ali was conscientious objector as were many other men who were granted that status, which he was not granted. Ali ended up standing his ground based on his beliefs, which is one thing I respect him for. It was pitiful the way people used wealth and power to get out of going to war while others were over there giving their lives because they didn't have the resources or connections to avoid it. It became fairer when they established the lottery, but people with money, power and influence and poor morality will always find ways to get over.
