My experience was much like Alex K's - family tradition, not worth making a big stink over. Plus - ours being an Irish family - I made out like a feckin' bandit on confirmation gifts.
But the BIG advantage is that any confirmed Catholic male not excommunicated is eligible to be elected Pope. Francis can't live forever... Boru
