When I was going to be confirmed Protestant little over 22 years ago, I told my mum that I'm an atheist, and she sighed a little and said, come on, it's a family tradition and we've already decided on the cakes. Cakes are arguably the bigger deal in my family than religion. So I got confirmed, the pastor knowing pretty much what I thought of the affair, which made it kind of funny. No biggie, you can just do it if you want to avoid conflict. It doesn't mean anything after all - except that in some countries like Germany, you get automatically deducted your Church tax
We'd have to know more about your background to judge whether rebelling is worth it.

goddam church tax. Being christened "Church of England" meant I was exempt from it when living in Germany because CofE isn't part of the cartel. When my wife was out of work, I had to pay *her* church tax for her! Tax on someone else's beliefs. Who would have thought?

I was confirmed in the United Methodist Church before I had told my parents that I didn't believe in God, and  it literally had no impact on my life, other than the church pamphlets they kept mailing me for several years.  I did it to please the parents, and it was no big deal.  Just go through the motions for your parents, and then officially leave the church at your earliest convenience.

It does impact your life.

It's too late. Like me the rcc will continue to believe you're a catholic no matter what, simply because you've been baptised. And according to rcc rules you can never leave.

Of course, what a bunch of geriatric paedophiles believe shouldn't really affect what you do or don't believe.

Actually a neighbour of mine got expelled from (private) school for sticking out his tongue with the wafer on it during mass. Disrespecting Jesus was the charge.
