The Netflix/Anytime/OnDemand models are the ones that will win out as not only are they easier to organise (no complex scheduling) but they're cheaper to administrate and deliver to customers. If I was working for Ops at a network channel, I'd be pushing that project then making big bucks in bonuses from delivering the savings.

Streaming TV/Video services in Germany are even more behind the times. I don't know whether it's the idiotic legislators or companies, but I suspect the former.

Because the television industry - like the film industry - is years behind the rest of the world. Streaming will inevitably replace it in time. Putting traditional TV on life support won't help save it.

So streaming is the future?

Definitely. Netflix and its ilk have already eradicated Blockbuster and indeed the entire traditional film-renting industry at large (there's still a few outliers out there, but the big players are gone). Broadcast television is next. The most crucial factor is one that's driven basically every industry ever - convenience. Unlimited, on-demand shows accessible whenever and on whatever device you want. How can traditional TV compete with that? More and more excellent, original content is being created by Netflix and Amazon Prime every day, it's attracting bigger names every day, and soon TV as we know it will be displaced by a better, more sensible, and more convenient business model.
