This resonates with me - I got involved with a Baptist youth ministry in my mid-teens, and I got very involved. I made an honest effort at faith, but ultimately it failed to take and I abandoned it entirely by my late 20s. Fortunately, my immediate family holds similar views, so we have a religiously stress-free home! If there is anything that separates me from most atheists it's that I am a non-materialist. In some ways I've been an atheist all my life, in that, although I was brought up in a mildly Christian home, I never believed a lot of the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, and probably most of the miracles. Probably my best memories of childhood religion was the cookies and Hawaiian Punch we had a summer Bible school, and to this day I still love many of the old hymns which are, I believe, beautiful songs. There was a time in my late teens when I got involved with some born-again types, and I believed I believed, but looking back, I really don't know whether I "really" believed. Of course, that didn't stop me from trying to "spread the word" - which makes me question whether anyone REALLY believes - a subject that I believe is pregnant with possible discussion and debate! See you at Converts Corner! I would say there are a lot of theists who don't really believe the shit they spout. My relatives are a good example. They like to talk about Jesus this and Mary that, but according to the Paul's Epistles, I commit less sins than any of them do. Hell, none of them have ever read the Bible.
Hi there
Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.
Good to have you here
“What screws us up the most in life is the picture in our head of what it's supposed to be.”
Also if your signature makes my scrolling mess up "you're tacky and I hate you."
Welcome! I hope you like it here.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
What a well thought out intro, sir. I salute you! To be honest it was your name that piqued my interest; it made me think of bunnies. Anti-climactic, I know, but I'm glad I read your intro
Welcome! What exactly is a non materialist? Is it someone whose poor and has nothing yet is happy with what they have? If so, so am I too, a non materialist! >_<
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite. Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment. Quote:Some people deserve hell. I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong. |
