Brexit: Legal battle over UK's single market membership

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38126899

Quote:The government is facing a legal battle over whether the UK stays inside the single market after it has left the EU, the BBC has learned.

Lawyers say uncertainty over the UK's European Economic Area membership means ministers could be stopped from taking Britain out of the single market.

They will argue the UK will not leave the EEA automatically when it leaves the EU and Parliament should decide.

But the government said EEA membership ends when the UK leaves the EU

Isn't that what Brexiters wanted? The single market without any conditions (that everyone else has to abide to?)

I would be wary of a country that seems incapable of making a ham sandwich. Thankfully for the UK, investors are highly prone to magical thinking (it was good before!).

France hasn't a chance at displacing Britain without significant liberalization of financial laws or providing first class support for Anglophones. The former is possible, the latter highly improbable.

Not at all Brexiteers.

I want us completely out, we can form trade deals with plenty of non-EU nations.

My understanding was that to be part of the EEA you had to be a member of the EU, or EFTA. The UK was in EFTA before joining the EU, so maybe they are saying that the UK would revert to EFTA membership?

The EFTA most definitely don't wan't them. They've seen the destructive, spoiled, dog in the manger attitude towards European cooperation that the UK has continuously engaged in since Maggie the milk stealer's accession in 1978 and don't want hand, act nor part in it.

Actually, Norway seem to have softened to the idea of the UK rejoining EFTA after initially expressing major concerns, but its moot anyway.

Having read a bit more about it, it would seem that the legal challenge is that the UK would remain part of the EEA even if it was not an EU nor an EFTA member (the reasoning being that the only way to leave the EEA is to formally withdraw from it, and withdrawing from the EU does not do that).

I think it's an interesting idea, as a transitional arrangement.

Spineless, backstabbing tory bastards.

Quote:The UK’s Brexit secretary has indicated the Tory government is leaning towards a “soft Brexit”, saying he may maintain low-skilled migration and is prepared keep contributing to the European Union’s (EU) budget for “access” to Single Market.

David Davis said last night that he is concerned about labor shortages after Brexit, The Times reports – a strong sign the government is giving into to pressure from anti-Brexit campaigners to maintain open borders.

Fact is Bella, some migration will be needed, the agri industry amongst others has relied on migrant workers even before joining the EC. If you read his actual comments rather than the commentary in the article he isn't talking about keeping free movement as exists now.
