Pursuing a "hard" Brexit could alienate core Conservative voters and cost the party the next general election, a group of Tory MPs has warned.

The group - which includes ex-attorney general Dominic Grieve - said "a moderate core" of Tory voters do not want the party to become "UKIP-lite".

PM Theresa May must ensure she is not "pushed" into a hard Brexit, they said.

It comes as the Lib Dems overturned a 23,015 Conservative majority to win Thursday's Richmond Park by-election.

Ex-Tory MP Zac Goldsmith stood as an independent after leaving the Conservative Party, but Lib Dem Sarah Olney - who fought the campaign on the issue of Brexit - won by more than 1,800 votes.

Maria Ladenburger, the daughter of a high-ranking EU official, was returning from a party in the university city of Freiburg in Germany when she was assaulted on a cycle path.

She was raped and then drowned before her body was found in the River Dreisam.

The shocking incident happened on October 16 but details have only been released after an arrest on Friday.

The suspect, an Afghan migrant, was caught after police found DNA on a scarf near the path.

The scarf reportedly belonged to Maria.

They also found a strand of hair on a nearby blackberry bush.

Officers then trawled CCTV to see find people with a similar hairstyle, which led them to the suspect.

Following his arrest the suspect, aged 17, pleaded guilty to the attack and will be sentenced next year.

The unnamed migrant arrived in Germany last year as an unaccompanied minor and lived with a local family in the city.

Theresa May has unveiled her latest Brexit soundbite, sparking further confusion about what her approach to leaving the European Union will involve.

Commenting during her visit to Bahrain, the Prime Minister ruled out choosing between “this sort of Brexit or that sort of Brexit”.

She instead pledged “a red, white and blue Brexit” – which she appeared not to consider a type of Brexit.

The new detail about the colour of Brexit comes after months of Ms May and her ministers repeating the tautological mantra that “Brexit means Brexit” when asked to outline their policy detail or objectives.

“We also want to get the best possible trade deal for trading with and operating within the single European market,” the Prime Minister told reporters after a speech on Royal Navy warship HMS Ocean.

“But I’m ambitious about what we can achieve in the trade deal. I’m ambitious for that trade deal because I think it’s important for Europe as well as being important for the UK.

Fact is Bella, some migration will be needed, the agri industry amongst others has relied on migrant workers even before joining the EC. If you read his actual comments rather than the commentary in the article he isn't talking about keeping free movement as exists now.

Okay you're stating the obvious here. Migration is most definitely needed however mass migration is not. We can let in some foreign workers without having to accept freedom of movement at all.

It is increasingly looking like a 'hard' Brexit won't be happening because the Tories are a bunch of cunts. Looks like all the remoaners will be getting their way in the end. They certainly won't be getting my vote in the next election.

A hard brexit won't be happening because it is not and never was a feasible solution to the UK's problems, as a point of fact it exacerbates them..... not because anyone's a cunt, lol.  People can dream of walling off their little island all they like, but ultimately, the reality of the situation will have to be accounted for.

Brexiters were sold a bill of goods, how hard is that to accept, really?  Did you expect otherwise from politicians? All part and parcel to a wave of similar movements across the western world. If I could have decided how it all turned out, I'd much rather have seen it fail here and succeed for you, there....unfortunately, our largess allows us to indulge in pipe dreams to an extent that the same ideological factions in the UK can only covet from afar. MPs have voted to back the government's plan to start formal talks on Brexit by the end of March next year.

They also supported a Labour motion calling for Parliament to "properly scrutinise" the government over its plan for leaving the EU.

The votes followed a compromise between Labour and the Conservatives, who had argued over the questions to be put.

The House of Commons' decisions are not binding on ministers.

MPs backed Labour's motion, calling for scrutiny of the government over Brexit, by 448 votes to 75 - a margin of 373.

This followed another vote over the government's amendment to the motion - adding the proviso that the Brexit timetable should be respected - by 461 votes to 89 - a margin of 372.
