Do you not think they should be helped to come off whatever their addiction is? Would that not be good for them and society overall?

Welfare should be for essentials not vices.

If you get an addiction, it becomes an essential. Society still has to deal with stuff.

This is just a debate about socialism really? Like, how left are you?

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn't understand the assignment. I told them they didn't understand life.

I don't see it like that, I must say. I sense that some people have a real problem with welfare abuse at the low end, whereas I have more of a problem with fatcat abusers at the top.

Is that the only problem with it? Some people may 'play the system'? That's always going to happen, no matter what you do, but it's a minority, and there are people that really need support. I completely agree with you that it's far less of a problem than people playing the system t the other end of the scale.

I say it's about socialism because that position is an advocate of welfare versus right wing capitalism, which is less so.

Am I a socialist if I share my peanut butter sandwich with you? Does being right wing mean that you must be selfish and stingy?

It's a minority? Really? Whereabouts do you live my friend? I know hundreds of people who play the system.
BTW I support the welfare system for what it is intended for. It's just a shame you get complete ass wipes who abuse the system.

So now it is time to apply the "Which is more likely test."

Which is more likely? That they will therefore stop being addicts OR they will beat up little old ladies and steal their shit?

Yep. Ever see the platform of those libertarian cocksuckers on this issue?

Quote:Therefore, until the income tax is repealed, we advocate dollar-for-dollar tax credits for all charitable contributions to encourage a transition from public welfare to private support.

Translation: We'll give money to the poor as long as it doesn't cost us anything!

Bastards.

It's not about how generous anyone is, it's about how much the state should be involved in supporting those at the bottom of the pile. Left wing tend to say they should get more involved whereas right wing tend to support businesses to create employment for people. I'm not saying anyone right wing is less generous than left wing, just a different way of solving social problems. That is what the thread is about.

I live in Ireland, and I know a few who play the system. I'm sure there are hundreds, even thousands who play the system, I'm just saying I know far more who actually need the support they get. Is there really that many abusing it to make it not worth supporting the people who really need it?

Is there any more left in the coffers to even play the system in Ireland?

I personally agree with welfare, only a minority take the piss, the majority need it. I'm fine with that. If my tax money goes to someone needy i'm more than happy, far happier than having the banks suck it up and replace said money with a large dildo with it's own laser targeter aimed at my poo hoop.

Cliffs:

I like paying tax to help others less fortunate, i consider it a duty.
I dislike banks cocking up and then continuing to get away with it.
I dislike toys in my A*.

But what about the issue of how much the govt should be involved in supporting those at the TOP of the pile. The right wing has been supporting business and giving them tax break insentives to move their operations overseas. I know what this thread is about..I am the one who started it... its about welfare in general..wether for the poor or for the corporate.
