Civilian control of the military is necessary to prevent military control of the civilians.
Consider how effectively the military-industrial complex already yanks the levers of control....remove whatever meager protection our safegaurds provide and imagine the result.

A country that prize democracy and liberty should never look to the military control of the civil administration as a solution to poor civil administration. I guess this would be a risk in a country like America with such a powerful military. We don't really worry about this in Canada  .

OH, IDK, a small but dedicated minority is capable of oppressing a majority. The flipside to americans love of guns and general infighting and myth-making of the heroic criminal is that we're...at least to some extent, ungovernable except by consent.
No matter which bickering faction attempted a coup it would quickly find the limits of it;s operational and practical authority, and on those margins a well armed resistence would invariably be present. Among the resistors, would be a great many people with military experience and a deep knowledge of US tactical doctrine. Some of them, relevant and recent experience with successful insurgent strategies Could the same be said of Canadia.  (I;m just joshin, btw..we'd never let a coup happen to our favorite neighbors - we'd send in our forces and....oh, wait a minute, nvm...lol)

Wouldn't social Democrat and democratic socialist just fall under "liberal"?
