Again with the irrelevant questions?

Yes or no, it is frequency dependant. In the visible range, there is mostly reflection or absorption. For higher energies there's a probabilty for a photon interaction whilst it's inside you, by photoelectric effect or compton scattering but mainly yes it does "go through you"

How so?

We know that a certain mass density (which may be a fuction of position) of dark matter is required to explain galactic orbits.
This means there is a certain number density required. But since it's unknown what the mass of an individual dark matter "particle" is (since we don't even know what it is!), it is impossible to say what this number density should be, and your quote suggests it's billions, even though this cannot be known.

1.The question is relevant as it supports the context of the premise.

2. I did not propose the premise, it is a quote.

3. It sounds as if you are trolling through the information to find something anything that you can suggest it is not as stated. You can apply this method to everything. What do you hope to accomplish.

4. It cannot be proven or diproven. Therefore, logically the converstation has no merit.

5. But if you insist, I am wrong.

No. Dark matter cannot be electromagnetic radiation, since this carries no mass and mass is the one property that dark matter must possess.

I know, I think I agreed with this already

I was pointing out scientific misinformation, this is something that irks me.

Exactly! So if you don't know what a number is, why suggest that it is "billions" ?

(May 9, 2009 at 1:36 pm)g-mark Wrote: 5. But if you insist, I am wrong.

Maybe you are, maybe not. That's the point. Randomly assigned a value to something that is totally unknown is ridiculous.

It's like me saying "last night there were 54329 stars visible with the naked eye from the top of mount Fuji"
Sure I might be right, but with me having no way of knowing at the time I said it, why choose a value at random?

Yeah I know you didn't write it.
I pointed out misinformation, you asked me to explain, I did.

You seem a little defensive, sorry if it seemed like I was having a go at you, that wasn't my intention.

Honestly g-mark, you can't expect to post a quote, seemingly agree with it, and then back out of a discussion over the invalid nature of the quote by saying "ask the author, not the messenger". Next time if you don't want to argue, either don't post the quote, or accept that the quote is wrong.

The quote cannot be proven or disproven, as dark matter is open to interpretation.

Therefor it is neither right or wrong. When the particles are found, which may never happen, then the truth wil be known. But it does exist, as the affects can be obseved in the physical world.

It is understood that this matter passes through all physical substance. However, the rate cannot be known as it is undetectable.

Quote:It passes through everything we know on earth at billions of particles every second

This part of the quote cannot be proven and therefore maybe incorrect at this point in time. However, it may also be true.

There is a difference betwee unknown and incorrect.

No, no, no.
The only property of dark matter that we know is that it is massive. We have no idea how it might interact with known matter

That's the whole point

If something is unknown, it is meaningless to assign a random value to it!

You know, you sound very much like a theist asking someone to disprove their god

Why don't we discover and finding out what dark matter is before instead of allready creating answers to what it is.
- Science is not trying to create an answer like religion, it tries to find an answer.

I don't think he was creating answers, just posted a misinforming quote, then tried to stubbornly hang on to it when I pointed it out.
