Well, honestly, hey kind of expect people to just shut up and take it, but that's not very forward thinking.

The national anthem/flag have a lot of symbolism built into them for a lot of people.  That's been the case for centuries across the globe.

People are confused at the hubbub, because for a lot of us, we just don't care.  I don't give a shit about the anthems. But all you have to do, is imagine something symbolically important to you, and then imagine someone used that occasion to stage a protest.

If someone's kid died, and during the mother's eulogy, you took a knee for climate change awareness, you'd be an asshole.   That's an extreme example, but the national anthem/flag through a combination of sincere personal experience on top of centuries of tradition and a lifetime of indoctrination is going to get backlash even if the protest is legit.  (I thought Kap's was very justified.  I think this weekends events are mostly bullshit).

Oh yeah because conservatives in the states have not fused those two things into twisted pseudo cult.

We don't stand at a funeral to swear an oath of loyalty to mothers, though. We've fought against many things that have centuries of indoctrination. Fealty to a country is a bit outdated.

You missed that boat by 40 years.  Goes back to the Vietnam days of "Love it or leave it."

And it is always the most fascistic of assholes doing it.

I think what the flag represents to different individuals varies a lot more than just "Oath of fealty".  I think for a lot of people, it is similar to a eulogy for people who died in the military.  For others it may be an outdated oath of fealty.  For Kap, it represents a country that shits on people with his skin color.

It's a very similar situation to the confederate flag, but this time it's predominantly the right is being whiny and the left being self-centered.

Here's a question for the Trump loving folks:

If America is so great and wonderful, why is your Orange Leader's slogan "Make America Great Again"--which by implication is that America is not great.

According to them, it wasn't great when Obama was president.

For me, its just that sports are about fierce rivalries and competition and that sportsmanship is about recognizing we are united by things more important than team loyalty. I may a be a Bears fan and you may be a Packers fan but at the end of the day we're both united in our love of the game. Playing the national anthem was a great ritual that reminded everyone that through it all, in the grand scheme, there are still things that can unite us, reminding us that we're actually all on the same team, America, united by our love for this country. But no, some players had to bring politics into the stadium. They couldn't leave it at the gate. For some of us, sport is a way to forget about the outside world for a little while. They have taken that away from me. Now all the fun is gone.

I thought sunday was bullshit, but the origin of it all: "not wanting fellow black people getting shot willy nilly" isn't really a political opinion.  Unfortunately, it got twisted into one.

I find all nationalistic displays rather funny and don't participate, this gets a bit frowned on at Navy command but there you go.
