RE: If you could make religion illegal
You could make indoctrination illegal, the crap would die out within a generation.

No. I hate thought-police, far too religious for my taste.
And banning something gives it power and recognition. I have none to offer to religious imperatives.

That's not why they're tax exempt.  They're tax exempt because people used to have this ridiculous notion that prosperity gospel preachers were running a charity..for the benefit of their parishioners and society, bringing "the good word" to poor miserable sinners and making the country a better place.

Except it wouldn't. There'd uprisings and secret indoctrination.

I ask this because a lot of atheists I know think religion is the root of evil. Most of the atheists I know would prefer if religion just disappeared, so I'm guessing they would make it illegal in a heartbeat.

No.
As a cynic, I'm inclined to believe that people are the root of all evil. I have no compelling reason to believe that the non-religious in general are less self-serving, bigoted, and prone to dangerous group-think than the religious.

So I'd just as soon choose the Devil I know, if it were up to me.

The reason that religion is capable of providing a specific danger (as opposed to just a gaggle of shitty people) is that it is a form of organizing those shitty people and leveraging their shittiness to greater effect.

So, yes, people are prone to x y and z...but a milling rabble poses very little threat compared to a mobilized and equipped group of mujahideen - and even more particularly so when they can blend in with or sell themselves as the milling rabble - or when the milling rabble supports their cause directly or indirectly..despite not having the courage of their own convictions..themselves.

Oh I see. Then yeah, get rid of it.

Pool, you've learned nothing in your time here, have you?

Of course we're not interested in making religions illegal. Passing laws that protect those of other/no religion? Sure. Making it illegal, no.

Besides, even if someone were to entertain the idea, it's impossible.  You can't make peoples' thoughts and beliefs illegal.  It's just literally impossible.

The bible seems to think it is, what with "thou shalt not covet" and "If you look at a woman lustfully you have committed adultery in your heart". Which doesn't speak well of their god.

So let's ignore the problem then, children have rights too. They bang on about the rights of unborn children enough, what about childrens rights to a balanced education and freedom of choice?
