Thank you for referring to the Enuchs, that made me search, and find this horrible article.

I know about the Ottomans' "neutered slaves" that used to serve the Harem -of course; neutered so they don't shag the Sultan's female slaves-, "آغا" they would call them; but I didn't read about them in details.

And the spread of this vile act until China, predating Christ's birth even; is making me think about the amount of hypocrisy so many display when they talk about how "Muslims are monsters ! damn some African Muslims cut gentiles".

Poor bastards; this was one of the saddest things I ever read..I thought it was an ancient Egyptian habit that some Muslim societies picked up and the Ottomans perfected. But this is global ! and another spot of shame on the history of humanity.

To be fair, eunuchs aren't terribly common today, and when they were, the castration did yield some privilege to compensate for the lack of genitalia (or the attendant bladder incontinence that ended up as a side effect of it, particularly in China, where they took both the penis and testes), and, except for the hijra of India, people who have their genitalia removed for medical reasons, or those rare non-transgender people who decide to have them removed voluntarily, there isn't much point in illuminating this messed-up portion of human history. It's largely a historical curiosity, except perhaps with India's hijras, and I only learned about them while I was writing this post.

Also, Wyrd, your remark about Jews becoming eunuchs is really off-base, since the quote you took specifically forbids eunuchs from being part of the Sanhedrin, and overall, the Jewish tradition does not condone castration.

Imagine if he had said that guys HAD TO BE eunuchs in order to get into heaven.  That would have been in line with him saying that people have to be cannibals and zombies.  We know how they love their quasi castration practice.  An inch or two and south and then, presto, a new eunuch ready for heaven!

And when my mother told the newspaper about it, they called her Satan. Yes, she was the anonymous "member" cited in the article; I should know, I overheard her talking with the news on the phone. Well, while it was intended to be a step in a more ''profitable'' direction for government ''Don't ask, don't tell', has been the norm for most of North American history when it comes to realities and behaviors that Christianity would like to sweep under the carpet. Sexual assault, general violence and brutality, human sacrifice both abstract and material, and renouncement and enslavement of self and others are presented in the Bible as commendable behaviors. By maintaining silence and assuming all good people are sinners, some sense of mutual protection is kept in place so that people continue to profit from their positions of power in the larger machine of society. It's sickening, but at least it is heartening to finally see some winds of change within my lifetime.

Shit like that may be defensible if they at least have safeguards to limit harm, like keeping pedophiles the fuck away from children. Sadly, churches and other powerful organizations tend to not do that because that would be sensible.
