The accuser in my OP was raped over 35 years ago and the statute of limitations for criminal charges has, sadly, expired.

I've said it before (in a thread where the blowback caused a number of good posters to quit these fora) but having a statute of limitations in cases like rape is totally fucked up.

I used to live near Buffalo, NY and, while looking through The Buffalo News today, found out that one of my family's parish priests was raping young boys for many years. He worked at St. Mary of the Angels Church in 1982-1983 and another nearby parish for a few years after that.
They show his photo in the article and I remember this prick.

I went to catholic schools ages 4-17, including St. Mary's parish school while this rapist was there.
Sometimes the priests would come over from their rectory to visit classrooms. Much deference was paid to a parish priest who was walking through the halls. Everyone would get quiet and treat him like a VIP.
We were giving deference to a fucking child rapist!

I don't know the ultimate disposition of this rapist's case because I can't bear to read the news stories. It makes me sick.

My 4 younger brothers also went to this school and church. One of my brothers was an altar boy. Now I need to start some awkward conversations.

When someone robs you does the robber have to pay you a lot of money or does he go to prison when he's convicted?

Suppose a priest raped someone and the person got $1 million for it.  Would the person consider the experience worthwhile since the "reward" was $1 million?  Would the person be willing to undergo the experience again if the "reward" was $5 million?

Would the victim be more pleased if the perp had been imprisoned for a long time or if he had been executed instead of him personally, the victim, receiving the $1 million?

Having a statute of limitations is one thing, but laughing at child molestation is not a fucking joke.

You have no fucking clue what you are talking about. Child molesters use the same forms of intimidation as domestic abusers, and use threats and shame to keep the victim silent. Your bullshit comment here shows you have no understanding of the psychology of either the victim or the perp.

An abuser will most likely be in a position of power and someone the victim knows. The abuser will use threats and intimidation to keep the victim silent. Your vile remarks do not empower victims, it keeps them silent.

EVEN on the issue of being bullied as a kid, you know what I got for reporting to the police being beaten up and having my nose broken? The perp's brother found me in school one day and punched me in the stomach to the point I lost my breath and hit the floor. I GOT BEAT UP for being a victim. It can be far worse for a child or abused spouse if they try to report it.

If you want to cure abuse, you need to make it easier for people to report, not by blaming them for not reporting it, but create a climate where they feel they can trust others. If they feel they can trust someone to listen, not judge, THAT is what will do it, not "why didn't you?' More like "why others should not blame the victim".
