In California under the State Constitution aliens are granted extra rights that are not specified in the Federal Constitution. It does not differentiate between legal and illegal aliens.  The central question is whether or not an illegal alien can become a citizen of a State without becoming a citizen of the United States.  So if an illegal alien moves to California he can buy real estate and establish residence, in effect becoming a citizen of California although he is not an American citizen and won't be considered a citizen in any other State.  

So the issue is a legitimate Federal Constitutional issue.  Can aliens become State citizens without becoming American citizens?  Has anyone ever taken this issue to court?

Even in the pre-Civil War era, the dilemma was clear, especially as the 1850s increased the rights of slaveholders with the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas-Missouri Compromise, and the Dred Scott decision; but it didn't bother the South. Immigration laws here in California were enforced long before Trump and Sessions came along. President Obama was called the deportation president by the Latino community because of the high number of deportations made during his administration.

The problem with the current administration is they are obsessed with getting everyone out, including immigrants who've lived in the US for decades and lived otherwise law-abiding lives and also including immigrants who've served in the US military. This broad-brush approach is a problem, not a solution.

Also, California is the 6th largest economy in the world. Many immigrants here work hard, start small businesses and otherwise contribute to our economy. We have a successful economy in the Golden State because of immigrants, not in spite of.

You act like it's not a hell of a lot easier to get to America (where minimum wage laws allow them to earn more than in an hour than many of them have to live on in a day) than Venezuela.
