Supreme Court Rules In Favor Of Colorado Baker
RE: Supreme Court Rules In Favor Of Colorado Baker
Oddly enough, that;s wingnut messaging that;s been widely accepted as true as well.  It started out as a way to convince juries to rule in favor of corporations that had hurt people.  The idea got so much traction lobbyists were deployed to make legislation that "cracked down on frivolous lawsuits" which..in true american fashion..is a very pretty way of saying "kept cases of corporations hurting people from ever coming to court in the first place".

It really does take a dyed in the wool asshole to troll the courts, and everyone -aint- doin it.

Why do adults care about what other consenting adults do in the bedroom? I’ll never understand this. It affects you in absolutely no way at all. How does someone get so upset by something that doesn’t affect them in any way, to the point of feeling compelled to refuse them a paid service? Bunch of sensitive snowflakes, IMO. 😏

Yes, it's really sad. It's because it's been drummed into them since they were a child I expect. This is one of the reasons I'm so against indoctrination. Religion gives people a way of being a bigot without having to give a sensible reason, and the bigotry is no doubt taught too.

You have to be such a god-damn cunt to refuse to serve someone for such a stupid reason. I mean, every single customer is virtually certain to violate rules in the Bible, and they will be violating many themselves every day. It's pretty arrogant of this guy to think that making a cake is passing his "blessing".

Having read the article more closely, it seems unclear if he'll be allowed to get away with discriminating in the future. It looks like the charge against him for doing it was dropped, but not in a way that sets a precedent.

As far as I can tell, he would not get away with this again if his case was handled correctly. Do you think that's right? Or is this really still for the courts to decide?

The two arguments seem to be at odds:

"It's only a cake, it doesn't really matter, so who cares if someone can't get one"

versus

"It's a work of art and he shouldn't have to give it away to just anyone"

Which is it? Anyhow, I still don't see how it being "art" has anything to do with it. Does this actually carry some legal weight? Or is just another flimsy argument to try and justify bigotry?

They seem to both have scripts set up by lawyers on what to say to get the job done.
The gay couple say this isn't about a cake it's about public accommodation. And that the baker refused to sell them anything else in relation to the wedding.
The baker is carefully saying that he would sell them anything he just won't create a cake to be used for a gay wedding because that's against his religious beliefs.

When it comes to art I don't exactly know how it works but I would think artists can choose what they create and to some extent might want to know how it's used.
A heavy rock musician might not want their music used for a tampax commercial or a rap artists might not want their music used in the background of a gay dating site commercial.

There's no real debate about whether or not the three main religions of the world are prejudice against homosexuality, they mostly just are.

The principle left up for debate is how much freedom does an artist have in choosing what they create/What their creation is used for.

A great deal of verbal and political gymnastics being performed in relation to the baker's inability to separate his beliefs from his business.

It's a shame that such action doesn't instantly lead to going out of business. I expect that a stunt like that in England would do the trick.

I wonder if this baker (and other Christians who think like him) would have had a similarly fervent reaction if the couple had been straight, but the groom-to-be was a previously convicted child molester?  Would he stand firm that this man’s sexual conduct violates his god-given morals and principles, and refuse to serve them?  Or would he think because the child molester is marrying a woman, ‘The Lord cured him!  Praise Jesus!  One wedding cake coming up!’

I would be really interested to see what would happen if the gay couple went into a Muslim bakery near me asking for their wedding food.
I really couldn't see them losing many of their customers on any scandal like that.
I'd be terrified of walking around my area as an openly gay person in a couple anyway.
