I hadn't seen this before. It seems to cover a lot of the conversations I've had lately, plus I have to admit comfort in the knowledge that another person understands things the way I do!

Out of interest.. do you find the program interesting or is it a turn off? I found his key points very relevant to recent/ current discussions here which is why I posted it. It's hard to see from one point of view what someone holding the opposite view would think. I know I've been militantly atheist before, and I like to think of myself as empathic.
Like me reading TGD, I'm thinking twat, idiot, WRONG etc etc but I still find it interesting and appreciate the skill and wit.
I find it curiously interesting because it's so different. I saw the first part or two last night though because it was 5.am and I think it was time I'd got to bed! So I did.
I DO plan to see the rest though...just not just yet...one reason being that I still have unread posts on these forums to respond to LOL. EvF
5am! Jesus! (oops )
I thought my 2am stints were crazy enough! LOL at answering those unread posts
Not worth watching at all. The guy makes up a word "ultra-darwinist" and then proceeds to use it throughout the film to categorize everyone who doesn't agree with him. This includes atheists like Dawkins, and people who believe "Meme theory", even though the two groups do not mix very easily. At the end of the film, he claims that because "ultra-darwinists" (he is speaking about meme-theorists at this point) cannot prove meme-theory, or that the "darwin meme" is true, then they cannot prove God doesn't exist.
Very sneakily done, put groups A and B in group C even thought A does not necessarily equate to B, and then use the flaws of one of the groups A/B to say that the entire group C is at fault. It's like putting homeopathic doctors into a group with people who believe in UFO's, and then saying that because homeopathy doesn't work, UFO's don't exist. Pathetic argument.
On the matter of the 'Ultra-darwinism' thing - I remember that last night when he talked about two groups of extremists and then mentioned the first group saying something like (I paraphrase perhaps) "On the one side is Richard Dawkins[...]", etc - I actually laughed out loud.
It's obviously bound to be bullshit; you can tell that from the start how he speaks of Dawkins, that and the fact that it's basically cherry-picking! But that doesn't stop it being interesting for me. I watch it partly for my own amusement; partly to see how some Christian types (other than the fundie creationists) tick. 'What makes them tick', etc. EvF EDIT: Yeah this is actually worth it for me even if ONLY for my own personal amusement TBH, LOL (IOW it's funny cos it's so laughable). I also find it funny how I think they play a Bjork song Play Dead, in this video? (only it's instrumental; whether it's a song that Play Dead was based on I don't know? But it's the same tune I think) And it really kind of uplifts the doco (well it's supposed to I think) simply because it sounds so awesome? And what I find quite funny is when Bjork was asked in an interview if she could change only ONE thing in the world what would it be she said she'd get rid of religion! LOL - ironic I think if only slightly, hehe. Amuses me anyway. |
