Fox killed Firefly with timeslots. It’s probably his most beloved show. I remember being at DragonCon back in 2011 I think, still years after it had been cancelled, and the show’s panel was packed, standing room only in the biggest room in the hotel (we’re talking several thousand people).
Also, if it were so bad, it wouldn’t have resulted in a feature film.

Wasn't the film only made to wrap up the show after it was cancelled?
I'd hardly call that a reason for the show to not have been cancelled.

I mean, I don’t often hear of production studios acquiring the rights of failed TV shows and funding full length movies for them. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s a common thing.
Someone believed in the show enough to agree to funding the movie. Also, apparently the DVD sold out in 24 hours after the pre-order was announced. Face it, the show has fans, lots of them. I prefer to count success by how many people appreciate the work, not how long a network chose to fund it. The fact that it still has large amounts of fans to this day, with only 13 or so episodes and a movie, speaks volumes.
