To be clear, on the grand scale, or the macro scale, nothing matters. However, we do not live on a macro scale, but rather on more of a micro scale. We live moment to moment, on a scale of half seconds, to seconds, to minutes, hours, maybe years for those with a lot of foresight (these are the people who can truly delay instant gratification in the pursuit of a ten year goal or something). But we do not live on a grand scale. So no, in the grand scheme of things, nothing matters. But we don't live on that scale, so lots of things matter.
My family matters, my health matters, my duties/responsibilities matter. Because they all concern ME. Cooperation is necessary for our survival... we are a social species. Beyond that, it is interesting to find meaningful things in life to pursue. It gives us drive... gets us up in the morning.
Why is this so hard for some people to grasp?
Though, I suspect these people don't truly have a hard time grasping this, but are rather looking to make some tricky argument which is supposed to corner us into admitting that god is necessary for meaning to be present. Just a hunch.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

Eik, I read through what you wrote and I must say, my eyes are still hurting. Is your purpose to hurt my eyes ?
It doesn't matter if that is your purpose.
What matters in life is that we live it.
We live it, as if it's our only chance to ever go surfing or to hold someone we love in our arms. We live it as if this was our only life.
We treat people with respect and dignity because it's their only life.
Live this life with whatever purpose you find that makes you smile.
Because in the end, our purpose gets passed down to those who remember us well.

I'm never going to get back the five minutes I spent watching that video.
