Just to clarify: the new version of The Thing is not a remake, despite using the same title; rather it's a prequel of sorts (that link to thethingmovie.net describes it as a prelude). It will tell the story of what happened right up to the point where Cameron's 1982 remake begins.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Some of the scenes in the trailer appear to be nearly identical to the original. But hey, cool. Looking forward to it, regardless. 
I first got wind of this new version a few weeks ago. The Carpenter classic (oops, my bad; I spelled it 'Cameron' in my earlier post) was on telly - had been on for over an hour actually. As it had been ages since I'd seen it, I thought I'd refresh my memory via the wikipedia entry, and when I saw one of those disambiguation things for The Thing (2011) my heart sank, as I imagine yours did when you first heard of it. It was when I checked up on it that I found it was going to be a prequel. This is the first time I saw the trailer though.
Interestingly enough, I learned that in 2004, John Carpenter himself had revealed how he might pull off a sequel using the original cast - at least, the two still standing at the end. He would have used the idea of extreme frostbite to explain the rather advanced ages.

Two extra points here.
One, Carpenter's version was a remake, albeit a kick-ass, take no prisoners one. Two, the original short story upon which The Thing is based, "Who Goes There," came out in in the 30's and is a damned scary read, especially by the standards of its time. http://www.lacunalethe.com/wgt.pdf I'm a huge horror buff. When Candyman came out, I made myself stand in the mirror in a dark bathroom and say his name three times. I didn't sleep that night. It was great. I'll admit that Paranormal Activity scared me, but then, so did The Exorcist. Event Horizon's a damned good flick, too.

The story was cool. The first movie was just camp. The second one bored me, too many puppets. (Given the state of CGI in that day, puppets were the only way to go, I think, but still...) I'll see the new one just because.
No scary movie in existence has scared me as much as courage the cowardly dog. Back in the day, I ruined a lot of good pants because of that show.
