13 days to Deermageddon
RE: 13 days to Deermageddon
Some people...

An old riding buddy of mine went and bought a new rifle, and needs to get it sighted in - with two days to opening day.

Has one box of twenty rounds.....

So he comes to me....

I had plenty of the same ammo - so we shot mine - roughing it in - then fine tuned it with his. I could have done it with less ammo - but I figure he needs practice.

He' s hitting a 5 inch group at 100 yards. .

Close enuf.....

But next time, a little earlier in the year bud....

One day to go..

Now for the mad, last day rush to get all the shit I have to get done, because there won't be time for the next couple of weeks.

And - last night coming home from the store, I almost got a dumb 4 point with the car less than 200 feet from our driveway.. Stupid thing was coming up onto the road, and tripped over himself reversing course.

I'll shoot him first.

Good thing I bought that freezer.

Saw a doe run thru early in the day. I never shoot at moving targets.

Evening came, she came back going the other way. She made the mistake of stopping. She ran less than 100 yards. Upon gutting - found it was a good heart shot.

Reloaded. Decided to wait til dark.

I hunt under " Mafia rules" - that is - never leave any witnesses. If you shoot into a big herd - you won't see the rest that year - and maybe next.

Then a small herd came across the field. All does, two fairly large - the rest yearlings.
Real tempting - but I decided to hold off.

Sometimes patience pays off. This time it did. I looked out across the field, and saw a big buck. I closed the back blackout curtains, set up for what I considered his most likely path , got into position, took several deep breaths, and waited. It was probably only 2 minutes before he came into view out the North window.

He' s now hanging out back. A nice 9 point. Would have been 10, but one broken off.

That new .450 Bushmaster is quite the round. 2 heart shots, at 120 to 150 yards.

Tomorrow, I' ll be butchering

Backstraps for dinner.

Tourist season should be treated as duck season.

It would truly be a deermagedon if the deer weren't thinned. Local report of a driver hitting a deer and losing control of the car. Car hits tree. Baby seat in back isn't buckled down.

Keeerect.

Quite true. The hunters bring the predator/prey balance closer to what is needed to keep the deer from overpopulating. In some areas such as Ann Arbor Michigan the cute and fuzzy lovers restricted hunting of all forms - and the deer population got out of hand. The city had to PAY " sharpshooters" in to cull the herd. Cute and fuzzy solution - spend even MORE money - and capture and sterilize the deer.

My solution?

Have bowhunters PAY for the privilege of hunting there - after demonstrating their accuracy on a life size deer target. The fees collected would more than offset the cost of one minimum wage examiner. Hell - I' ll bet they could find volunteers.

The Endangered Wolf Center takes deer from bow hunters that are "on the list". Lots of fresh meat for the wolves and an eye-opener for the people on the tours. African Painted Dogs are wasteful, they don't eat the hooves and horns.
