Flying is fun. Falling, and then the sudden stop is what frightens me.

I don't hate flying, I hate the feeling of chaos in the turbulence, as if the plane is about to flip over or break apart. It isn't bad at all when it is smooth.

Driving in a car is far scarier.

  This is why I have never, despite several opportunities, taken up sky diving.  Unless the fucking plane is upside down AND on fire, your humble narrator is staying put.

At one point in my Navy career I flew about once a week (for a three year tour). It grew monotonous. I was reminded of Jed and Granny on their first "bus" trip back home. ;-)

Flying in the US used to be fun,................. then 9/11. 

I routinely got pulled out of the boarding line for the quick empty your pockets and pat down.

True, but you also cant jump out of a passenger jet at 30-40,000 feet if something catastrophic happens.
