Can too much respect be bad?
November 15, 2019 at 11:58 am
(This post was last modified: November 15, 2019 at 11:59 am by Fake Messiah.)
Do you think that there is such a thing as too much respect and/ or is it a bad thing to respect someone too much?
To me it seems that it is a bad thing and the best example are religious leaders or clergy. It seems that religious people respect them too much that they get away with taking their money, living in huge mansions and castles while saying that they are humble and even having sex with their kids.
So it seems it's not good to respect someone too much, to the point that you don't ever question that person, never look at that person critically.
Or maybe something else is going on?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

of course. Everyone deserve some respect for having similar neurons, but not similar brains, to a worthy human being.
Religionists who are too false to admit it, such as belaqua, deserve rather less respect per each of their much fewer neuron, but still a measurable quantity not too much less than what I would accord a cockroach, but never let it be said I have no respect for him.

All good things in moderation. Everyone deserves a certain amount of respect, but one should always remember that everyone is Human, and just because someone is the most powerful person in the room, doesn't mean they automatically can do no wrong. Hence why you have pedo priests, corrupt politicians, and abusive parents.

Don't confuse respect with worship or adulation.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

We respect ourselves too much.
Of course I agree with the slogan "think for yourself." But some people actually believe what they think!
History shows we are very likely to be wrong.

Ok, I'm not getting the value of not believing what I think. If the thinks I think weren't believable to me, I don't think I'd be able to think them. Or maybe I don't think I'd be able to believe I'd be able to think them. I think the alternative to believing what you think is to think falsely, but then you'd NOT be believing what you think and you'd have unbelieved thoughts. I'm not sure that's possible.
Now, it's perfectly plausible that some other people might disbelieve what I think I'm believing (or what I believe I'm thinking), but I don't believe that's the issue. I think.

But we are of course more likely to be right if we concoct some imaginary absolute divine authority and then attribute our own thoughts to that authority.

If that's what you think I said, then you shouldn't believe what you think.

You should not believe your thinking about what I should not believe.

For those who are undeserving, any amount of respect is bad.
