Can someone be culturally racist without being race racist? (I know it's not the right term but you know what I mean).
Because The American culture scares the bejesus out of me! Are you guys really, really sure that nutty Trump isn't a symptom/a reflection of what America has become ![]() asking for a friend.

Rev, tell me what you think of this.
Last night, Victoria had 288 cases of Covid. The highest on record for us. The News went crazy. The Victorian premier read All Victorians the riot act, etc Police fines are flying out left, right and centre. All other states have put a ban an any Victorian from entering (without very good reason). And all this when Australia and NZ are the 2 model countries to follow for Covid response. Now, The US is breaking all sorts of Covid records (none of them good, as you know). Even Disneyland is partially opening tomorrow. (first time in 16 weeks). As a side question, why is Disneyland opening now when you have higher cases than which forced them to close in the first place. ![]() My crazy idea is that Americans, as a culture, are almost completely desensitized to "danger". Or rather "potential danger". America is also a great innovator because of this. With great risk, also comes great reward. This generational/historical cultural indoctrination seems to explain a lot of things to me, here, from afar. It explains many people's indifference to seeing guns (Lots of guns!), to ignoring health warnings about Covid, etc It's like they're immune to "danger". It's like "what can possible go wrong, right? lol". The constitution is set in stone and will come to my rescue like superman, if I need it, right? It weirdly reminds me of the conundrum of getting fully automated vehicles on our roads. The roads can never be safe even if only one human is left driving a car. It's like the constitution is only a theoretical guideline and will work if only everyone follows it at all times? This disconnect (to me) explains many things. Why 25% of the world's prisoners are in US jails, why the US has 46% of all the world's guns, etc... Everything seems to great in theory, but the opposite in practice. Don't get me wrong, I quite like some American culture. I grew up on Gilligan's Island and Mickey Mouse like everybody else, but! ![]()

And on top of all of it, Trump is demanding that schools open next month, or risk losing federal monies. Makes perfect sense - jam kids into places where it's impossible to social distance (school buses, classrooms, cafeteria) and expect them to wear masks (*chortle*). Honestly - what could go wrong? The sad thing is it sounds about right, Igno. Generations of risk-taking have made us rash, our education system has failed us, and unenlightened hedonism is winning out over reason and sanity.
And I’ve suspected for years that this is because there’s too many people. Not because there’s not enough food to sustain us, but because we only have a finite number of social roles to fill in society and we’re leaving a lot of the population to do nothing but fester: Fun fact: I can remember once watching Kyle Kallgren’s review of Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and hearing him open by explaining that, while every generation has feared the end of the world, it looks like we’re the first generation that’s starting to become okay with that. And with all this, plus the fact that it’s becoming increasingly clear that global warming is creating irreversible problems on Earth, it’s becoming harder to disagree.

It's Galilean. Smokes don't kill you. DDT is safe. Climate change is a hoax. It's just the flu! People of that ilk, sadly far too many, see guns and Covid through a filter of political ideology. If Al Gore says the planet is warming, they are compelled to take the opposite stand because Al plays for the other team. Follow the money to corporate lobbyists. Tobacco, oil, NRA, and now hospitality. They push the narrative of denial. We value profit over facts and lives. That tends to fuel artists and innovators.
Now for my final question. What percentage of the population do you guys think are "these" people who can't think straight?
Poor ol' Dr Fauci is always trying to balance between telling it like it is and NOT losing his job to the fuckwit.

I read a series of twitter posts from a guy on IMGUR.
The first was basically "how dare you demand I wear a mask? I know my rights and you'll never make me wear one!" The second was "I'm not feeling well. I think I have the flu. I'm going to the doctor tomorrow." The third was confirmation he had Covid and how much it sucks. The end of the post had a link to his obituary. 28 years old. I honestly have absolutely no sympathy for these fuckwits. Death by stupidity should be a legit entry on a death certificate. Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO?
