Yeah, that's the funny thing about people..even though we're busily replacing ourselves in any and every way we can, we still imagine that we're better at doing what the machines do better than us.
Probably another effect of the incomplete access to internal models.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

A TI-83 could beat me at chess.

-and a device with no computational power whatsoever can place the pieces more reliably, accurately, and quickly. Biology works with what it has, does not plan efficient or proficient means of anything, and isn't predicted on proficiency or efficiency of task in the first place.
It built temporary survival suits that fuck, not chess piece placing actuators - and it's largely failed by reference to that singular criteria. Our consciousness, such as it is and whatever it is, was derived from and is tuned towards -that-. It may be as rational to expect the ai that we're looking for as it is to expect a toaster to develop a birth canal and deliver a live-born blender that immediately cries out for smoothie mix. FWIW, I think that machine consciousness, if it doesn't already exist, is inevitable - but it's worth pointing out that the sort of thing we're looking for isn't just the long shot that we are, but the long shot that we are multiplied by the longshot of something fundamentally different from us happening along an identical path of development for no particular reason whatsoever - and to no specific benefit for itself.

I wish I had a studio so I could greenlight that picture! Toastender a gender bending tale of a toaster that thinks it is a blender but is really just a toaster with suddenly a birth canal that gives birth to... wait for it... a blender! That is a Jan Svankmajer film waiting to be made.
