I went to see Star wars with a sociopath and he genuinely thought that the empire was the government trying to stamp out radical terrorists...

It sort of makes sense.
(but how do I truly know that I'm not the sociopath cheering for the terrorists? I mean you guys (more sociopaths) can reinforce my psychotic beliefs and that will make me feel like the good guy.) Has any dictator throughout history ever genuinely thought he was doing the wrong thing?

Oh, this is totally true.

A young man from a desert country has his family killed as collateral damage by an occupying force. He is radicalized by this and meets a bearded adherent to an old religion who trains him in violent resistance techniques. 

The whole purpose of that series is to trick Americans into identifying with the rebels, while our tax dollars are paying for the Empire.

The only reason the terrorists won is because of bad leadership and stormtroopers who can't shoot straight.
