So I wind in this debate with a Right Winger who was essentially demonizing homeless people by claiming all drug addicts and mentally ill and thus to deserve help getting a place to live. When I objected he of course used a tired line that hates facts and threw up some statistics. The thing he missed of course what my objection was it wasn't against the idea drug addicts and mental illness are present in homeless people it's the idea that it's the sole cause of their homelessness and my reasoning goes as followed 

If drugs were causing homelessness then why are all the rich drug addicts, not homeless same logic applies to mental illness? Oh yeah because they're rich. It's almost like poverty is the actual cause. It's almost poverty that pushes people to addiction to cope or that it causes mental illness. But that's just silly right

Indeed, look at how many rich celebrities die of overdoses and then become memorialized just because they were famous.

Behold a really stupid statement i found 

drug addiction is not a health issue, lol.

It's not it's a social issue 

One inconsistency I see with lefties is “my body, my choice” but then, “do these drug addicts no deserve decency and dignity?” 

That's not an inconsistency you can have mastership over your body  and be deserving of decency and dignity

They certainly do,

No shit 

 but I believe that by choosing to do whatever the hell they wanted with their body, they’ve stripped the ability to provide decency and dignity for themselves.

This is why we should help them get that back 

Some people are just stupid.

The Right-Wing always go on about Venezuela as proof socialism doesn't work unfortunately for them 

1.Venezuela was never Socialist as the majority of its economy is privately owned.

2.What killed Venezuela was corruption, bad management, and overreliance on oil to keep their economy going, not a particular economic system.

There is a dumb argument righties are using where they cite studies showing a higher of mental illness and that's some sort of win for them. There is multiple problems with this tactic.

1. Mental illness is a broad category

2. Mental illness doesn't mean your ideologically wrong or stupid (Unless your tell me, Sir Isaac Newton was a moron for having depression or possibly being bipolar  )

3. These studies have small sample sizes and can't be used to judge the general populous 

4.They are either self-reported or done clinics which will skew them Leftward was there far less stigma of mental illness on the left and left-wingers are far more likely to seek help. 


So this tactic fails and is frankly shamful as using mental illness for political point-scoring is repulsive in the extreme.

I want to read Frank Herbert's Dune, but all Libraries and Books Stores are closed. And reading it on a screen or hearing an audiobook are not an options for me. Maybe there is a Garage Sale going on somewhere.

I always wanted to read that one, too, but never got around to it.

I read it years ago because a guy I was dating was determined I would like it as much as he did.  Not my genre at all.  I did slog my way through the whole thing but didn't enjoy it much.  Just not my thing.  I know it's very popular.
