Random Thoughts
RE: Random Thoughts
Whilst 1.5 million people are dying from poverty every year, and pastors, priests and popes are living in the lap of luxury, their religion merits all the scorn we may give it!
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The same argument has been made about the Blue Origin launch today.

The average minister does not get rich. I make almost twice what my minister does.

My dogs know about what time to expect husband home from work and they start watching for him. The oldest one knows about what time husband usually goes to bed and will pace around if he stays up past his regular bedtime in an effort to get him moving as it's her bedtime too. When my daughter shows up they expect a bite of an apple fritter or donut.

But when the trash truck shows up every Wednesday morning between 7:30 and 8:00, it's always a surprise that requires much barking and growling. Same thing again between 4:00 and 4:30 that same afternoon when the recycle truck comes through the alley.

If they can send two billionaires into space, why can't they send them all?

They aren' t surprised. They are just trying to tell you that somebody is stealing all the really good smelling stuff you keep in the box on the curb....

Did they suggest exactly which topology they suspect? I'm guessing S1xS3 as opposed to S1xS1xS1xS1. It's more likely to be spherical in the spacial dimensions and circular in the time dimension, I think.

Do anthropologists really fall in love with (and end up pseudo-believing in) the mythology of indigenous cultures which they study?

Or is that just a Hollywood trope?

Are you referring to a specific movie or set of movies?

The Relic is the only example I can think of off hand. But there was a Twilight Zone (Outer Limits?-- something like that) that I saw this theme expressed in. I've also seen it elsewhere.
