The biggest potential problem I see with EVs is the demand for lithium for the batteries. There is a lot of development in battery technology looking to overcome this issue but so far it hasn't yielded much. But if you compare a model A to a typical modern SUV, the differences are extreme. There's no reason to assume that EV design will not improve over time.

I'm pretty sure there was skepticism about automobile ownership among common people at one time. Yet no one says that now.

Let's say I fill up my tank every week and it costs $40 for a full tank.  That calculates to $2080 per year; $10,400 over 5 years.  There's your new battery and then some!

Maintenance: primarily windshield wipers and tire rotation. Tires every 40-50K miles. I had to replace the 12v batter this year. Brakes maybe never. I changed the brake fluid once. There's no transmission, no differential, no internal combustion engine, no cooling system, no timing belt or any belts of any kind, no a/c compressor, no power steering pump.

I bought this one used for a very good price, even factoring in an eventual battery replacement the total cost of ownership crushes even our Kia, let alone the full-size pickup.

GM warrants their electric car batteries for 8 years/100 000 miles (both for defects and scheduled replacement). If you get it replaced every 5 years, you never have to purchase a battery - the car will be out of warranty, but the battery won’t.

Not those well to do people that can afford a NEW car every couple years. Or EVER.

I for one have NEVER owned a new car and find the possibility rather unlikely.

But that effect would have to do with the cost of the car, not the cost of battery replacement (which was the point you seemed to be making).

No alternator.  That always pisses me off when it goes out.  Little warning and not cheap.  I guess no water pump either, eh.  Liking this more and more.  Eat it, OLB.

The biggest downside that is never discussed is the fact ( yes - fact) that the move to automobiles will eventually make it impossible for lower income people to own a car. If you don' t see this as a problem then we have to assume you think all poor people should be stuck in an inner city ghetto because they'll be reduced to walking every where. That is the only place they can survive. Rural life doesn' t include mass transit.

My only thought is that, perhaps, the 'market' and producers willing to innitially simply eat a loss will generate the volumetric prices that will see the 'New' (People have actually been trying to 'Electric' for over a century) equipment phase in.
