But the science of COVID-19 has become so politicized it is impossible to have reasonable discussion about those things.

For the rest of it you can consider masks a mode of prevention that is cheap and has no side effect except for comfort, and even that is minimal.  It's no more uncomfortable than wearing a hat.  It's like a condom for your face.  There's no good reason to reject such a method of prevention unless it is demonstrated to have zero efficacy.

We are watching the pandemic happen and the vaccine development happen in real time. To scientists, this is normal and how it goes. Although this is actually going far more smoothly than most infectious diseases, pound for pound and minus the human obstinacy factor. Wish there were a vaccine for that. It's just as deadly as any infectious disease, but I digress.

Scientific illiteracy is a serious problem anyway, but when you pair it with the partisan politics and the ubiquity of social media (the deliberate dissemination of misinformation is an actual destabilization tactic-and it works), it's the perfect storm.

Saw a YouTube video (can’t be arsed to look for it) in which a woman read right off the ivermectin label, ‘Do not give to horses, intended for human consumption.’ 

The guy commenting on the video pointed out that she added a comma. The actual label reads, ‘Do not give to horses intended for human consumption’, which is a whole different meaning. In other words, this stuff is so bad for humans, don’t give it to a horse you intend to eat.
