Right. As opposed to the Irish who had never, ever been British subjects. And yet the Irish constitution has no ‘natural born’ requirements to serve in any government post, including President or Taoiseach.

RE: Shatner Launch
Our founding fathers had a far more restrictive view of who was appropriate (for anything, really). They could have just come right out and said that politics was only for them and their cousins. Might not sound as good that way, but it's certainly what they thought.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Change it to ‘male cousins’ and they were nearly there.

It's assumed, right?

Lol, Shat is probably the first person with a wig in space

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

From the Act of Union on 1 January 1801, until 6 December 1922, the island of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

But it doesn't seem relevant.  The Constitution states that only natural born citizens may be POTUS, so that's the rule.  No one alive had a hand in writing the rule.  It seems at odds with just about every other office, which have no such requirements.  And as a nation of immigrants, it seem particularly disturbing.  But barring a new amendment, it is the law.

I was being sarcastic. TGN made the point that if the US didn’t restrict the presidency to natural borns, the FF we’re concerned that they might end up with a head of state who was more sympathetic to Britain than to the US, since all Americans at that time were recently British subjects.

I was pointing out that Ireland was in precisely the same situation in 1922, but didn’t feel the need to restrict political offices to natural born citizens.

And Ireland had been subject to British rule long before 1801.

Sorry, I didn't get that.  Should have read a few more posts.  FWIW there are people here who are open to the idea of changing the Constitution but that would be an uphill battle.

I like that the President needs to be born here.
