Back in the day, I was based briefly, at Ingleburn, not far from Sydney. Nice summer's day, me and me mate go to Bondi for a swim. While in the a water, I noticed a suspicious looking brown object in the water, quite near. I mentioned this to my mate, who is local. He said "Ah, that's just a Bondi cigar" Yair, the lazy and corrupt arseholes in charge were pumping raw sewerage into the waters of a world famous, busy and beloved Sydney beach (more than one beach, as I later learned)
---and people wonder why I'm a misanthrope.
Thought for today "--and GODDD said let there be light" and fair dinkum, youse could see for bloody miles!

I think the current UK government's ad agency are re-issuing this, given that the tories want to allow water companies release raw sewage into waterways and the sea.

Is one of those waterways the Thames river? Didn't they learn their lesson in the 19th century?
Why is it so?

You mean the Great Stink?
Yes and no. They really wanted to remove the stench because it was disgusting and because disease was at that time linked to 'bad air" . So Joseph Bazalgette build these splendid sewers, which remain is use. Got rid of the stench and disease caused by contaminated water. Of course the sewer didn't go to treatment plants or even out to sea. It just went further down the Thames, where the magic of that tidal river flushed it all out to sea.

I see. I had read that the banks of the Thames was deep with human filth for a time. I also read that the only reason Parliament did anything about it was because they were located right beside it. It is amazing that the same sewers are still in use after all this time.
Why is it so?
