Why does only best picture count?

Because Best Picture is the most prestigious award, and the only movies with black male main characters to win it in forever, just coincidentally were gay.

Why is huggy diaper still here? I think the novelty of dunking on his homophobia has run its course.

But they're still black, just also gay, so clearly it was never whitey keeping straight black men from winning.

And my amended list of Oscar-winning films from the past 20 years starring a straight black male protagonist:
  • Training Day
  • Ray
  • Last King of Scotland
  • Judas and the Black Messiah
  • Fences
  • If Beale Street Could Talk
  • Black Panther
  • Soul
  • BlacKKKlansman
  • Hustle and Flow
  • Selma
  • Get Out
  • The Blind Side (A bit embarrassing of a pick, I guess, but the protagonist is a straight black man, and it did win an Oscar, even if it was just for Sandra Bullock.)
  • Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Miles Morales is half-Puerto Rican, half-black.)
  • Crash (even if nobody black was even nominated, and Ta-Nahesi Coates hated it enough to call it the worst film of the decade, because he presumably never saw One Missed Call)

I’m also curious as to why films about slaves and slavery don’t count.

Boru

Because they almost never tell the truth and then theres the constant white savior element to make white people comfortable.

In the recent Harriet Tubman movie, the slave catcher (villain) was a black male, and the slave owner saves Harriet by killing the black slave catcher...

And also worth noting, from a cinephile, a lot of the movies that win Best Picture tend to not hold up very well. Look at the list of the movies to win the award since you were born and see how many you actually remember. In the estimation of a guy whose room has literally hundreds of DVDs, I'd say that the Academy only got the Best Picture right thrice since I was born. (Unforgiven, Birdman, and Parasite; Maybe add Silence of the Lambs to that list if it could be shared with Beauty and the Beast)

Not to mention it's still an arbitrary standard

Yeah winning the Oscars isn't actually proof the picture is the "best" so as a mark of representation it's a nonsensical bar, Also the winner being gay means nothing.

So let's just acknowledge the fact their plenty of straight black representation in media both statically and otherwise. Because it doesn't meet a hyper-specific criteria means nothing.

Someone PM'd this dumb take Hehe

Quote:I should add, a movie about a Venus and Serena Williams father, who is a straight black man and strong father, has all the white feminists and LBGT big mad, can't have movies portraying positive straight black men, now can we...
The objections have nothing to do with "movies portraying positive straight black men" the objection was that the idea that the father is getting credit for the daughter's hard work and it's not even close to ALL white feminists or LGBT people. Now I don't agree with this at all. But at least address what the object actually is. It has nothing to do with the farther being straight or black. So this objection fails. Oh, and there has been plenty of positive depictions of black fathers.
