If it weren't for mutations, I'd be fine with ending the mask mandate and just letting the anti-maskers die. Darwin in action. Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury. And people who actually have consideration for their fellow human beings would get hurt in the process.

I was just listening to a news report on the radio where they interviewed a trucker who is not involved.  His comment was to let them have one lane to do their protest but to let others by.  That seems way too reasonable to me for it to actually happen.

Also mentioned on the same news story is it's expected there will be some sort of trucker protest at the Super Bowl venue.

I think we have reached the stage of "Let's just fuck everything up."

That happened 5 years ago when they put Trump into office.

mask mandates are the last thing that should go.

Vaccine requirements should be the first to go. By now, everyone who is EVER going to get vaccinated has done so. Against new variants, protection against infection wanes after a few months. Are we going to define "fully vaccinated" as "had a booster within the last 3 months"? If not, then it loses its usefulness.

The virus is beyond containment or eradication. We are already at the "learn to live with it" stage, providing it doesn't overwhelm the healthcare system. For that - we need as many vaccinated as possible, but mandates won't help. The right-wing is fully entrenched and is now against all vaccines of all type. Science has lost the PR war with part of the population.

End the mandates? Increase them. And make vaccines mandatory*.

*If you are to keep your freedoms. Exposing others when you are unvaccinated is not just a danger to you but them also. It's not merely bodily autonomy if you're using your body to harm others.

Your boilerplate culture war garbage in a thread that has nothing to do with mask mandates was strongly opposed. The issue that was cynically exploited by reich wing astroturfers was a quarantine period at border crossings. All made irrelevant as a canadian protest the moment that the US established a similar measure.

Thought you guys loved border regulations? Should we let unvaccinated people cross the border into our country with no oversight? Do you see any evidence in favor of controlling access to this country, particularly amongst the unvaccinated, during a pandemic?

It would be nice if people were decent enough so that we didn't have to have things like mask mandates. There are people who cannot get vaccinated due to other health issues...you have no clue who you might run into that is dealing with cancer...nor do you now if someone has lowered immunity for other reasons. Wearing a mask is about giving a shit about other people along with protecting yourself.

I've read conflicting things about it. And of course no source, either way, should be trusted completely.

I guess I'm for masks just because of my experience here. In Japan social distancing is pretty much impossible, and lockdowns were never strict. We were slow to get vaccinated. But we're 100% masked. And of course Covid has been far less severe here than in other rich countries. So in my non-expert way, I see a correlation there. 

But again, I see the problem with forcing people to do it.
