How Jesus became God.

This course is fantastic:
Listen to How Jesus Became God by Bart D. Ehrman, The Great Courses on Audible.
Professor Ehrman deserves an Emmy for what was an amazing ("coffee fueled?") secular sermon.

Nice! I'll save this for a rainy day. (I've yet to get my free trial from audible).
Would you mind sharing some of the major points? Or at least some things that stood out to you.

I have listened to two other Great Courses by Professor Ehrman, his one on the New Testament and the other on the historical Jesus, which he references in this course, along with some others that he has taught for the Teaching Company. He does a wonderful job of packing the essence of those other 48 lectures into this one course, along with his major themes that he wants to convey. As such, he talks somewhat fast, almost preachy, and it reminded me of my youth with the Christian evangelical, tent revival preachers.

How did Jesus become God? Because it was a time when people were creating gods. Nobody made a god out of Joe Magarac, for example, because by the 19th/ 20th-century, creating new gods had become a taboo, therefore people create saints who are godlike creatures. So instead of becoming a God of steelworkers, Joe Magarac became a patron saint of steelworkers.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

It was an effect of romanization.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Jesus was a fantastic outside shooter from Boston. When Coach Paul made a recruiting visit, he asked, what position do you play?
Jesus said, I'm a gahd.

The simple truth is people just love making shit up.

Ehrman doesn't think that. They didn't make it up for the lulz - it was a competition. The winners would go on to shape every aspect of western civilization. The earliest christians didn't think there was going to be any western civilization. The christians started calling jesus god just when the romans were calling their emperors god - and this would be an issue until the conversion of constantine.
