The Absurd GOP

Quote:Declaring war on Mexican cartels moves into GOP mainstream

Leading Republicans across the ideological spectrum are rallying behind an aggressive and controversial new approach to the fentanyl crisis: Bomb the cartels, with or without the permission of the Mexican government.

The once-fringe idea, championed in private by former President Trump, is becoming a mainstream policy priority within the GOP — including among congressional Republicans and 2024 presidential candidates.

As he develops his platform for a potential second term, Trump and his advisers have discussed options for military action against the cartels that include unilateral strikes and deploying troops on Mexican soil.

Two other GOP candidates currently in the race have laid out similar proposals in recent weeks:

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who visited the border Monday, has called for sending U.S. special forces into Mexico to attack the cartels "just like we dealt with ISIS," adding: "You tell the Mexican president, either you do it or we do it."

"Biden sits in the White House and watches the fentanyl crisis like he’s a bystander. I’ll use our military to annihilate the cartels," Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy tweeted.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said recently: "I can’t understand why we’re fighting a war in Ukraine, and we’re not bombing the Mexican cartels who are poisoning Americans every single day."

Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) grilled Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas at a hearing last week on why the U.S. is not doing more to destroy the cartels: "Quite frankly, we need to take the gloves off. They’re at war with us, we need to be at war with them."

The paper that proposes a formal declaration of war against the cartels was written by former Trump immigration official Ken Cuccinelli, who now leads a super PAC dedicated to supporting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' potential presidential campaign.

I wonder if these idiots understand that drug dealing is a two way interaction. Cartels aren't running around throwing  fentanyl at people. You think Conservatives would understand the concept of supply and demand.

‘Bomb the brown people’ resonates better with the base than ‘let’s fund drug treatment programmes and break the cartels that way’.

It's not even about that. It's not "bomb the brown people" for some verifiable benefit. They want (not really) a war with mexico because it allows them to seem warlike. There's no other benefit or rationale. The other guys, with their support of ukraine, seem like the tougher hombres - and that encroaches on the brand. They want to pound the table and say "war war war!" - but not..like, in support of libs/china/burisma/eurocommie/hunters massive crack dick.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Yes. Fun fact: remember Hank’s death from Breaking Bad? That happened with one of El Chapo’s kids, but in that case, instead of intensifying the manhunt against him, the Mexican government ended up surrendering after a couple hours. That’s how fucking powerful the cartels are.

There’s no fucking way this will do anything but creating an Iraq-like situation right next door to us, not to mention increasing the number of migrants from Mexico (something I thought they fucking hated). Unless, of course, their planned endgame is genocide.

Texas Officials Would Rather Close Library Than Stock Books They Don’t Like

Quote: County commissioners in Llano, Texas have signaled they would rather close an entire library system than comply with a court order to stop censoring books.

On Monday, Llano County Commissioners called for a special meeting where the main agenda item is to determine whether to “continue or cease operations” of the Llano County Library System “pending further guidance from the Federal Courts.”

https://www.vice.com/en/article/jg58x8/t...-dont-like

A list of the books can be found on the last two pages of this court injunction.

Strange note: while news sources about this horseshit invariably mention 12 books being banned, it’s actually seventeen because two of the items on the list are devoted to seven books about butts and farting by two authors. And they got banned with books like Called Themselves the K.K.K: The Birth of an American Terrorist Group, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent, and In the Night Kitchen.

That what 'resonate with the base' means. It doesn't mean they actually want to send US troops to Mexico, they just want to sound like they do.

In the city of Guanajuato, the cartel goes after police units who are working against the drug trade. One of their tactics is to go to the homes of officers on their day off and execute the officers in front of their family. There are exceptions - but they don't appear to generally target random people. My hot take on this is that the cartels WILL retaliate against Americans, but it would be against Americans in the USA, not Americans visiting or living in Mexico.

^ That's why the big fish are reeled in by the Navy (who are in a balaclavas during the trial)? If people in the US quit buying that shit, they'd dry up and blow away, except for the ones who are buying into legit industries.

The guy who works in the office of the company I work for is moving back to Georgia. I said - oh, the land of MTG. He sighed and shook his head. It's one of two choices he and his partner have and his elderly mother is there. Did I mention he is very openly gay and does drag? He's not thrilled with the move but his partner's job is the bread and butter so they have to go.
