An explanation looks like this:

"As the universe decreased in density and temperature, the unified gauge symmetry at the Planck scale was broken spontaneously into a sequence of different forces.  First quantum chromodynamics peeled off, then electroweak became two separate fields.  Disturbances appeared in the electromagnetic field and there was light."

To have this instead is no explanation at all:

"God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

Hi LG,
Sorry, I disagree. God is a great explanation.  The Genesis story is not supposed to be literally true. The truth in it is just that God created the world.
But I respect anyone who doesn’t believe it.

Nothing in the universe is ever explained by any god, nor does Bible give an accurate description of the universe, and it is the same with the origin.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Hi all, here’s a question I’m sure someone can answer. How do you use the Quote function. I tried and failed. Seems I don’t know everything.

I agree, the Bible doesn’t give an accurate description of the Universe, but I disagree about it not explaining the origin ie God

There are so many kinds of Christians out there, probably there are some who make a claim like this.
I think you'll find that no serious theologian after Plato claims anything like this, though. Plotinus, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, all the way up through Boehme and Blake, would find that image of God to be insupportable and laughable.
(And by "serious theologian" I mean someone who doesn't ask for money on TV.)

How do you think it happened?

God decided and it happened.

I seem to be the only one on the Internet who doesn't know how it happened.

What are the origins, if any?  We don't know...

...yet!

And that "yet", to me, is the important part.

Our knowledge of the universe expands almost daily, and none of it points to deities.

And while it's a cliche, it is also true: if everything had to have a creator, so did your deity, and all the others.

Hi TV
Likely is a vague word. Yes you don’t know, “yet”. Nothing we learn about our universe explains its origin, except God.
It’s logical so say there was a first cause. Outside of time. That’s what we call God.
Cheers Barry

No.

"God" does not explain the universe, or, more accurately as we are starting to learn, the multiverse.

"God" is an invention of primitive men to help explain what they didn't understand. An invention that is still thrown up by primitive men to explain gaps in our knowledge.

Gaps that are being closed every year as our knowledge grows.

Soon, the god of the gaps will have nowhere else to hide.

No, that's not logical. And something that exists outside time, outside nature, shares the same features of things that don't exist.

Finally, that's what YOU call "god". It's what I call a fictional being.

If God made everything that exists, where was he before he made it, and who made this god?
Science doesn't know how the universe was created but is trying to find out (mostly worked out to a small fraction of a second after the big bang, working on the details)
Replacing "I don't know" with "god did it" is a cop out.
The meek shall inherit the Earth, the rest of us will fly to the stars.
