That's concerning. You're here to tell us about history but you cant think of a single time that the church shit on discovery?
I think we just have a disagreement about what agrarian managers and laborers need or needed. They always needed to know better, even if they didn't know better at a given time. Even if knowing better was not better...for the church..at a given time.
Correct, the church was a major land owner. As such they could exert alot of influence, and the main project for the church through the pre and post modern period was to navigate a serious of authoritarian landmines they themselves had created? I think they did so admirably, in that they didn't end up ground to dust like every religion before them. I'm not as impressed with their methods at achieving that..but that's because I'm some silly atheist, I'm sure. Nothing untoward to discusss..or...at least, nothing you can think of offhand, apparently.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I can think of some common historical misconceptions that you may be referring to, certainly. But actual examples of the Church "shitting on discovery"? None are springing to mind.

Knowing more was always helpful. But back then, that didn't require literacy.

What are you talking about? And what does it have to you with your claim that instead of being at the forefront of the Medieval Agrarian Revolution, they had to be "dragged along screaming and kicking"?
Quote:I think they did so admirably, in that they didn't end up ground to dust like every religion before them. I'm not as impressed with their methods at achieving that..but that's because I'm some silly atheist, I'm sure.
See above. I have no idea what you're referring to or what it has to do with pre-modern literacy levels or medieval agrarian innovation, so I can't assess how "silly" it may be.

You're the one who obliquely mentioned these 'untoward" things but won't elaborate. Maybe you could actually elaborate.

Books. Though there are a few good websites and blogs out there. [Link removed], for example.

If you can only think of misconceptions, and cant even imagine what my "untoward" refers to..then.....I'm afraid you won't be received seriously by the supposed audience of your books. Granted, that may not be your actual target market. Do you intend atheists to buy history for atheists, or did you write it for fundies?
Tim, can I call you tim? Tim was my dads name. I love it. Tim.....are you a snake oil salesman or a historian? Prove it - either way. You have the whole floor.

Why?
Quote:Granted, that may not be your actual target market. Do you intend atheists to buy history for atheists, or did you write it for fundies?
Mainly atheists, though it’s really for any rationalist who prefers accurate history over myths. So are you saying that unless I confirm commonly held misconceptions and myths, I won’t be well received by atheists? That seems very irrational.
Quote: Tim.....are you a snake oil salesman or a historian?
I’m a history writer who draws on the expert consensus of professional historians.
Quote:Prove it - either way. You have the whole floor.
I do? For what? You’re the one who claimed something about the Church “shitting on discovery”, but despite being asked twice now to elaborate on what you’re referring to, you seem weirdly coy about doing so. I can’t discuss this vague claim until you make it less vague. So, please finally do so. You have the whole floor.

I just did that. Is there something specific I should be noting?
